Trip to Cairo in May 2010

Hello Everybody!

At the end of May I went to Cairo for a short visit and I’d like to bring you up to date on the latest news about our project:

10 women have been learning reading, writing and arithmetic since the middle of May. I was able to join one lesson and it really was a special experience to see those 10 women, holding their children, learning the Arabic alphabet. We’re glad that it has got off to such a good start. In around 3 months, when these women have passed their exams, they’ll be given the first micro loans. Then the next two 3-month courses will start, and will, in turn, receive micro loans after passing the exams.

But I didn’t miss out on the holiday feeling either ;-) While it rained a lot in Germany, I spent the whole of the three days outside in the sun. ;-)

We’re looking forward to flying back to Cairo to visit our Egyptian friends with a bigger team at the beginning of October.

Cologne visits Cairo II

Just nine months after the last visit, Johannes Curio, Nik Raupp, Adrian Kreuser (all RAC Köln) and Michael Stegelmann (RAC Aachen) returned to Cairo for another eventful week, from 24 to 31 January 2008, to foster the friendship between the two clubs and to work on the details of our common project.

Once again, we were warmly welcomed by our Egyptian hosts and given attention 24/7 during the whole trip. Every day, a different member of RAC Kasr el Nile took care of us, showed us the cafés, restaurants and shopping malls of Cairo as well as taking us to meetings of both Rotaract and Rotary Kasr el Nile and even a costume party (thanks, Assem!).
As all of us had been to Cairo before, the touristic part of the trip was somewhat less relevant this time, however we got to know some other historical sights around Cairo, including the citadel and Saqqara pyramids.
During a day trip to Alexandria we were able to learn about the impressive efforts some Rotaractors of RAC Alex Cosmo are putting into a similar project. Thanks to their commitment, they have been able to impact the lives of hundreds of people in an Alexandria suburb. Their experience gained from several years of providing microloans and alphabetisation classes is going to be invaluable for our own activities.
One of the highlights was the return to Gezirat Mohammed. RC Kasr el Nile regularly holds „Medical caravan” days there, thus giving the dwellers access to basic medical care thanks to donations and the support of many selfless Rotarians and Rotaractors. It’s great to see, how the project evolves step by step, and even a camera team from an Egyptian TV channel was there to document the event.
We are more than grateful for RAC Kasr el Nile for their hospitality and looking forward to come back as soon as possible and work together successfully!

Adrian Kreuser, RAC Cologne

Finally…

We are more than happy to announce that we could finally get the approval of the Rotary Foundation for our Project on August 15th. After the completion of the money transfer from the US and from Germany to Egypt in the next weeks, the main part of the project can start at last.

First Emails

Now since we had such a great start between the two clubs and everything worked our very well on a personal level I’d like to take a look back.

Here are the emails how the relation between the RAC Cologne and RAC Kasr el Nile started.

Party in Cologne

A nice party took place in Cologne to celebrate the project kickoff. On the 25th of mai around 90 Rotaractors and friends got together in the Päff near the Friesenplatz in Cologne. From 9 till 3 everybody was enjoying the party dancing, talking and drinking Kölsch.
